Newly built system starts acting strange

Hi, ive just built a new system and it has been running fine for about a week and just yesterday it crapps out. I was playing counterstrike when the screen blinks for a sec and then the whole computer just shuts down. When i go to turn it back on, the fans spin the hd spins but the system led never goes on and the hd led is at a constant on. The power button then wont work to turn it off and i have to unplug it. This is very strange and this exact same problem has happened to me before. Any ideas on what i can fix or how this happened? thanks! Specs of system are in my sig

If its the rig in your sig, I would check the board since biostar are less than reliable from my experience. Also, what kind and rating of power supply do you have?

Yea its the rig that i have in the sig. The psu is like 300w and ive tried different psu's and different ram and i get the same problem. Im about to rma the board back to newegg i just dont know if it even is the board or if its the processor or what. thanks

Well, unless overclocked to death I have seen exactly 2 cpu's in my ~10 years of experience die naturally so the board would be my first bet

k thanks, i wasnt overclocking it at all. Ill rma the board but should i see if i can rma the processor too? or is that not needed?

I'd put money on a cheap ps as being the root cause of the trouble.

I dont know why everyone wants to blame the PS for everyones problems nowadays

Amen . . . another worthless "blame it on the PS" post.

cgras90 it sounds like you've swapped everything out and it's down to the mobo or cpu; as mentioned earlier in the thread odds are it's the mobo.

id check the PSU and the vid card. open up the case and put your hand on the vid card. if its scalding to the touch, id replace both.

Well, what are the other PSU's you've tryed? If they're all ~300 watt generics, then you probably need something better. Just head down to Best Buy, get yourself an Antec power supply that's over 350 watts, try it out for a few days, and return it if you're still having problems.

The other psu i tested was a good one out of a friends system, its fine i know. As far as the video card, ive tested many others. The funny thing is, this exact same problem has happened to my last system. Any ideas as to why? Im using the same case as last time. Could the case be frying the board or something?

doubtful. if the vid card and psu are fine, the only other possible explanation would be a voltage short on the mobo.

The case could be making contact with the board and causing a short. Unlikely but it happened to my roommate. In his case some how a screw came loose and fell between the mobo and the tray.
I'd still bet on the mobo. but when you get a new board use MBM or Speedfan to check your voltages.

Ok, just packed up the motherboard and processor of to newegg for an rma. I also am planning on getting a new case. If i check the voltages and they are kinda off, does that mean i need a new psu? thanks
