Newly built system can not get connected to the internet

Hello,
I just finished the system yesterday and I can't seem to get connected on to the internet. I am using the onboard LAN and have all the drivers loaded that came with the motherboard. When I check my internet connection status, I'm showing that I have packets sent but none received. Everytime I try to manually connect (right click on my internet connection icon, press connect), I keep on getting the error message "Error 678 the remote computer did not respond".

Is it a fresh OS and fresh drivers?

EDIT: And you're sure it's a router and not a switch?

Have you installed chipset drivers to enable LAN?
