I just built this system. Before I even loaded Windows XP the computer locked up while I was in the CMOS. I restarted and the computer worked fine. I loaded Windows XP without any problems and downloaded all of the patches from Microsoft's website.

Now when I reboot, about every other time, the computer locks up during the POST. It doesn't always lock up at the same point in the post however. Sometimes it locks up right away, other times not unitl the drives have been detected. The post code on the mobo is different each time it locks up. When it locks up, I hit the reset button on the computer and the computer reboots. About half the time, this boot is successful. If it locks up again, a third reboot is normally successful. Once in Windows, everything appears to be fine.

I believe I have the latest Bios and 4 in 1 drivers.

I double checked the jumpers and they are set correctly.

I loaded the optimized defaults in the CMOS.

The temperatures reported in the BIOS are within a very satisfactory range.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yes, one other thing...

When the Black window with the XP logo first appears on the screen, the logo is VERY dim for a couple of seconds and then suddenly brightens up to normal. This does not happen on any other XP system that I have worked on. Anybody else have this happen?

Check the other connectors, such as the connector for the heatsink and make sure those are in the right place. Hope this helps.

I have seen the dim logo alot and i don't think its a part of your issue.

Might be ram if the problem is that random. thats my best guess

My Western Digital Hard drive causes that on my computer. On a hard boot where the power is turned off to the drive, the computer will freeze during POST, or it will not find the drive, and stop after not finding a bootable floppy.

On a warm boot, it just takes a while to find the drive, then all goes well. to get rid of the problem I added another non-switched PWS to my computer, since I was only running a 250 anyway. Now one is for the mainboard, the other is for all the drives and fans.

<edit>
try removing your HD to see if the problem goes away.

I swapped the memory stick for another and the computer still locked up. I noticed a tendency of the computer to lock up especially after I enter the CMOS. I get into the CMOS and begin arrowing down the options and BAM the computer locks up and I get a beep every time I press the arrow key.

I will try removing the harddrive and see if the problem stops.

The mobo appears to have come with the most recent version on the BIOS. Is it possible that the bios is somehow corrupt?? I have decided to reflash it but the EPOX website is down at the moment...

I swapped the harddrive for another brandnew one and the computer still locks up. Funny thing, if I stay in the bios for very long, it always locks up. Now for the kicker... I just put together another system with an 8KHA+ mobo and an Athlon 1900+ CPU and it does the same damn thing! Is the Enlight 300W PSU possibly not powerful enough?!

EPOX website has been down all weekend so I haven't been able to download the bios in order to flash it (again, I believe I am already using the most recent version).

Help me out people! Someone must have had/be having this problem.

Thank you.

WARNING ABOUT THE XP UPDATE!!!

I too downloaded the updates, specifically the security patch, and had to reboot for it to take effect. My system crashed hard! It would not recognize my hard drive at all. I swapped out that hard drive with an ME drive I have and the system worked fine. I then took the XP drive, changed the jumpers to a slave, put it in my slave slot and it was still not recognized. I called MS and they said "did you read the install warning before you installed it?" I went nuts, it is a required patch for their OS that they made for a product that I paid a pretty penny for (XP professional).

Making a long, frustrating story short, I had to completely reinstall XP for my drive to work again. After that, I lost all my documents and settings on the C: drive. Luckily I back them all up on the other HDD, except for my address book, which I lost everything from. Bye bye all my email and addresses.

Watch out for that update, I don't know if it was just me, but I don't think so...

i have seen this happen quite a few times with WINXP. people want to blame the hardware but in reality it is the OS updates causing the problems.... if your system does not reboot after a microsoft update make sure that the next time the system loads press F8 and load the LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION. that should back out the changes the update did. if it does not you may have to do a repair to the system.
good luck
