Hi, and thanks for looking. I just got finished building a computer, and i got it to turn on, and got it to the BIOS, but after about 2 minutes of being on, and all the fans running, it just shuts itself off. This happens every time i turn it on. I have read that it might be from the CPU getting above a specified temperature, and it could be turned off in BIOS. If so, could someone please tell me how.

I have an Evga nForce 750i SLI Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo e8400 Wolfdale 3Ghz Proccesor
Western Digital HDD
Soney Disc Drive
Raidmax Smilodin Case w/ 500 watt PSU
e-Geforce 8600 GT 512 Mb Vid card.

Case has 4 fans, and the Cpu has its own fan.

I searched Google, and some of the links suggest there are some issues with the temp sensors in E8400 Wolfdale CPU's. You may find help at some of those links.

If your CPU isn't the retail version, and you're using another HS/fan, did you use heatsink compound? Most people recommend Arctic Silver 5.

Even if you got a stock retail HS/fan, if it has a pre-attached thermal pad, you'll probably get better results by removing it and using AS5. Windex or rubbing alcohol are good for removing old compound and residue from thermal pads.

You should use only a VERY thin coating of AS5. Thermal compound is only supposed to fill any microscopic pits or gaps between the mating surfaces. Anything more than a thin coating actually impedes thermal conductivity.

I see. i went to the System Health, and My cpu was reading 190 degrees Farenheit, and rising. That might be the problem. It is the retail version with the stock cooler/heatsink. Thanks for the help, ima check and see.

the temp is more than likely the issue, take the HSF off clean the processor and HSF. Reapply the thermal compound correctly and make sure you seat the HSF correctly.

Well that may explain why your temps are so high, did you assemble this yourself? If you baught a boxed processor it should have come with some sort of thermal paste, it will look like a little package of white goo, you need to spread this on the processor before you install the HSF to create a seal and help cool the proc. If you don't have this I suggest picking up some Arctic Silver 5, it's spendy but does a great job. Here is a link on how to correctly apply.

in BIOS, it should show you the temps, stay on that screen and watch them till it reboots, report back what the start temp for the system and cpu are and the temps just as it reboots.

Looks like your chip is running at 88.8C approx so you probably don't have the heatsink and fan installed correctly. Check to see that all clamps are secured properly. Did you install aftermaket thermal compound or was it the default Intel thermal tape?
