Depends on how much RAM you have in that thing.
Unless it's at least 8 MB I wouldn't bother, and even that is a little on the low side to ever do anything useful with it.

I think it has 32 meg RAM. I'll have to look. I wouold like to run windows 98, if possible. I was more worried about the hard drive being 1/2 gig.

windows 95 can run on 4mb of ram. windows 98 will run on your computer without a problem.

of course, usability is another issue and for that i would recommend one of the free unixes (i prefer netbsd in this case).

MS

Both of these say that you meet minimums for 98. I think 95A would run quicker. Though 95B gives you fat32 support, a little better plug and play, and is somewhat more stable. Either of the 95's have a smaller footprint after they are installed than 98.

Saying that you could run 98 doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy it. It will defintely take some time to boot up and start programs. Some anti-virus programs won't run on a 486. But if it's all you have...

Stick with 95. I would only install 98 if absolutely necessary, like the need for full usb support (which I doubt you have on a 486) or wireless card support if it were a laptop.

You create a dos floppy disk that has netbue capabilities.

Then you download the cab files onto the local harddrive and then use the setup.exe program from the installation cdrom to install them from there.

Look up on google for directions. It's been so long I don't remember exactly how to do it.

if your computer has ethernet then you can use a boot disk that installs a free unix from the internet. or you can rip out the harddrive and install an os using your main computer and then put the harddrive back (if you have an ide computer with a convertor).
