Well i heard befor about the new hitachi "deathstar" hard drives and i heard that they were terrible. Are the newer Hitachi hard drives better? How about the newer Maxtor Hard Drives? My friends are telling me not to get the raptor becuz its a waste of money becuz of the less gigs you get. I just want a good hard drive that performs good and will last me a while, for a about 3-4 years. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Heres my rig coming really soon :) (By the way I game a lot if that changes anything)

Amd Athlon 3500+ (San Diego) (Cpu) (As soon as it comes out)

OCZ El Platinum Revision 2 (512X2) (Ram)

Want the fastest desktop non-SCSI drive... get the Raptor, at the expense of quietness and lower storage capacity.

My pick for a nice balance between noise, performance and heat output are Samsung SpinPoint or Seagate Barracuda drives.

But... dang the Raptors are fast. But loud.

Raptor is quite a waste of money if you are going for capacity.
But if you don't intend to get a high capacity drive, and opt for random seek performance, it will not disapoint.

Ah 3-4 years... Raptor has 5 years warranty; Other than that, the only option is normal Segate drives which has 5 year warranty.

For 3-4 years of usage you might want a higher capacity drive instead of going for performance though

Dude,

Look at it this way... ALL HARD DRIVES WILL FAIL... eventually.
Get one that has the longest warranty (seagate) and go with it.
Just remember to back up your data at regular intervals.

Remember... no hard drive will last forever.

Any that are 7200 RPM and 8 Mb cache. I also would go with SATA as their cables are thin and easy to organize. They also benchmark a little faster, but I have never seen any real world improvement.....yet.

The Raptors are the best of the best common desktop drive. Not the super expensive high end 15K SCSI or the standard 7200RPM 8/16MB cache drives. If you've got the money, go your it. You'll love the speed. But a standard SATA 7200RPM drive of the same price will give you a better storage capacity compared to the sparce 74GB given by the Raptors.
I personally like big fricking fat drives for my systems since I like to store anime on it.

I'm using a Raptor and the Hitachi 7k250. They're both nice. Although if I had the extra money, I'd probably get a pair of 7k250's instead of a Raptor. Even with over 250 GB of storage locally, and another 160 on a network drive, I still find myself deleting things to free up space.

I'd go for a Raptor in your case, since you are going almost all-out.

Then grab a big storage drive from Seagate or Western Digital (i don't touch Maxtrash or Hishitti) :p
Merely personal preference is all.
