Newer DVD Titles?

I purchased a Panasonic A300 DVD-Player back in late 1997. It has been working flawless (kids watch 2-3 DVD's a day...can you say "Got my money's worth") up until I tried playing 'Lord of the Rings'. I get about 60-70mins in to the move (or chapter select) and it starts skipping/screen pause were it's un watch able. It's a brand new DVD without any scratches. Plays in a couple other players without a problem. I tried this when the player has been off for several days and it still won't work. Does anyone know what's different with this DVD?

I know I should be looking at buying a new one, but It's more complicated than it looks. See back in those days the decoders weren't built-in to the receivers (I think sony was the only model that offered one and it was prices high). You either purchased a separate decoder or got a player with one built-in. I got one with the decoder built-in (It cost around $100 more...player retailed $699, got open box at BB for $519) so my receiver doesn't have one. If I replace the player I'd have to get one with a built-in decoder or replace my receiver. Either way I don't want to spend this much money if I don't have to. So far DD5.1 is working out just fine for me.

Is it just LotR or do other DVDs have the same problem? My DVD player has pausing problems on most newer DVDs, and I always assumed the DVD player was having problems switching between the layers on the DVD, but that is just a pure guess. My DVD player is a Pioneer circa 1998 (one of the first ones to come out with component video out). I plan on replacing it as soon as I upgrade to HDTV, but then again my receiver does my sound decoding so that's not an issue for me.

It could be the laser tracking is starting to go, if so you'll start to see more of glitches and the picture going blocky on you. My Panasonic A110 started having trouble this year and I just replaced it with a $99 sony NS-315 which has much petter tracking and a slightly sharper picture. It doesn't have built-in decoding though, you have to step up a couple of models for that.
