they show 25 different brands if you just want a 512MB stick of PC3200! you can get 2 512MB sticks of the cheap brands for 1 512MB stick of the expensive brands.

why don't we review the cheap stuff to see if it's OK?

The cheapest 2 x 512mb kits are from

kingmax
mushkin
kingston
corsair

All those are good brands...

The more expensive stuff will have faster timings and will generally overclock better.

The kingmax is $69 for a gig after rebate... how much do you want to spend?

but how do we know the wintech or buffalo RAM is not similar? it's probably junk, but i never saw anybody put it to the test.

Well... it could be... but if the Kingmax is the exact same price as the cheapest ram newegg sells and the buffalo is more expensive, why bother?

Buffalo and Kingmax have been reviewed at various websites from what I've seen... Buffalo is nothing special, but not horrible. Same goes for Kingmax. You get what you pay for, but neither of them are complete trash.

you're right about 512x2 kits. i did not look at those.

but i'm still curious. there are still 15 brands of RAM i never heard of. some are cheap and some are expensive. i wonder why they're not widely reviewed.

If they were known to be good and were widely reviewed positively they would charge more?

You got me. :)

You're absolutely right. This is how G.Skill hit cult status. Nobody had heard of them, but along the way someone found out they overclock like champs & within a few months they are now considered one of the top 3-5 RAM's.

Good point.

I'm not willing to beta-test hardware.

Besides, there is always some newb that comes along and buys some cheap new weird brand off of Newegg and starts raving about it despite the fact that it's re-labled generic RAM. It's human nature to think what you have is the best and good for them. Give me RAM from the above list... you might add Crucial to that list too.
