Newegg Reviews: Biased and filtered?

To tell you the truth, I've never really seen a *BAD* NewEgg customer review. They're generally 4 or 5 star.

Are they filtering out their stuff? I have reason to think they are, especially when some people give the product a 5 star rating and bash it down to hell (maybe Newegg's filtering out the 1-2 star things?).

What do you guys think?

Pretty much all of the sites filter their reviews. They might put one bad review on, but make sure it is one that is really poorly written so that it makes the writer look like a moron, and you dont take them seriously

they HAVE to . . . otherwise they would get in legal trouble with the brands they carry [and the ad dollars they get] because of posting anonymous negative opinion from customers and [competing brands pretending to be customers].

They give their own reviews a FWIW. They are pretty upfront about their policy of not posting negative customer reviews . . . i think you can find it in their FAQ. Do a "search" here . . . i posted that link not too long ago in an identical thread.

if you want 'real' reviews, hang out here.

I do see bad reviews there. Common trend I see among a lot of reviews:

"Blah blah, product does this, ergo, vis-a-vis, concordantly.

Newegg delivered on time, etc."

That last line is usually what helps. Eloquently say exactly how the product is junk (if the information is true, it's not slander), but mention how Newegg managed to deliver the piece of junk quickly, and that it was well packaged. Your review just might be printed.

And seriously, if they didn't moderate the reviews somehow, you'd get people spamming and neffing constantly.

Haha. Yeah. I remember when Download.Com's reviews were simply "Submit a review" and it automatically got posted. WHEW that was a mess!

I've made about 5-6 reviews, and 2 of them were negative - not distastefully either, I was just pointing out what had gone wrong. They never made it though.

IIRC I've never had a negative review that got posted. I feel sorry for average joe six pack that actually bases all of his buying descisions soley on New Egg reviews.

I usually look at the number of reviews. Something with a lot of reviews at least has been purchased by a lot of people, so must be pretty decent. The most helpful thing about the reviews (for me) is finding out what other hardware was being used. For instance, I recently purchased an Athlon XP Mobile cpu, and wanted to couple it with a low cost motherboard. I went with the first board which had a review where the user used an Athlon XP Mobile. I probably passed up boards with would have worked with the mobile cpu, but was relieved to buy one that was KNOWN to work.

They have been filtering them for years. I tried posting some negative comments about a product but they refused to post it. The way to get it published is to say "Soyo is garbage, but Newegg.com Freaking ROCKS!".
Things not to say:
[*]Where you can find it for less
[*]Refrenecs to competitors
[*]Profanity
[*]Poor grammer or Run on sentances.
[*]I will list more later

I think they throw in a negative comment now and then just to make it look fair, but it's not. I've posted honest reviews with no flames, prices, competitor's names, etc. and they skip right over them. The only ones that seem to make it are those that end with "NEWEGG ROXXX!!!!!!!!!"

I don't pay any attention to their reviews anyway. Too many posters saying crap like" I've only had this up and running for about an hour but it's totally stable." And then there's this 5 star rating, "I haven't got it installed yet but it looks awesome!" Yea, that's gonna help.

And questions with 5 star ratings! "Is this a type I or type II compact flash?" How does a question get by as a review?

Newegg is a large store with pretty good customer service and fair prices, but they are not the awesome parts entity most people believe them to be.

Those reviews are part of their marketing plan, so take them with a large grain of salt but be sure to do your research elsewhere before you buy.

Yeah, but they do hvae that disclaimer saying they do not recommend basing on the reviews.
Also, nobody is going to openly demean their own product, it just wouldn't make sense to do so.
Anyway...I usually google for a review/analysis of the product in question.

Me too. And I agree with kmmatney - the reviews help me figure out what works with what. I'll give you an example:

My friend bought an MSI Neo2 with a BFG6800GTOC.... board didn't liek the card. He didn't know what the problem was. After looking through the reviews, it seems as though the board doesn't like the BFG 6800GT... so he RMA'd it and got an MSI 6800GT.

I also used this to check if a 7700AlCu was compatible with my motherboard.... and it turned out that yep, a guy said it was. So I bought it.

Are Amazon reviews filtered? It seems like I see a lot more negative reviews there than at NewEgg. Anyway, if Amazon can post negative reviews, so can NewEgg. NewEgg shouldn't post reviews at all if they're filtered to make everything look great...

yes, newegg filters the reviews out. it's a way they get people to buy crappy products. a friend of mine wrote a huge review of this soundcard he bought, telling people everything about it, pros and cons, but they didn't post it. he thought at first it was over their word limit but it was just under.

It would help people to avoid bad products that most of us noob wastes time experimenting with them. Few dvd burners are good such as plextors, nec and pioneer, the rest are gargabe. Their just trying to sell the products and don't want to hear anyone bitching about anything even if it is legitimate. I've buy so many crap that are next to useless on newegg, their wasting my time and money to ship it back plus restocking fees as well. newegg's painless rma is the only thing that saves it from going out of business. some other sites are even more biased like pcimicro.com where everything has 5 stars rating

Newegg would never filter out its reviews. Why would a company do such a thing! (sarcasm)
Its a known fact they do this. Just do your research on a product before buying. Then when you are done use Pricewatch to find the best deal and purchase accordingly. Make sure to research the company you are buying from and their return/rma/warranty services.

Try to be an educated consumer.

I think filtering the reviews renders them completely pointless. Obviously, it's one thing to filter for offense material and whatnot, but if a customer posts a negative review about a product, I'd leave it up. Stores filter them because they figure negative reviews will stop that product from selling. Is that a bad thing?? If a customer buys it and finds out it's crap, they are ticked and send it back. That doesn't help anybody.

I'd leave the bad reviews. If the product is garbage, and we get lots of bad reviews, we stop selling it. Why even sell something if it's that bad anyway? Finally, if a manufacturer complains about the bad reviews and threatens legal action of some sort, the answer is that you take the reviews off, AND the product.

Doens't that make a heck of a lot more sense?

That was my attempt at sarcasm ;) but I agree that most sites will post good reviews to sell an item. Like an annoying sales person!!

Ever noticed that there are conflicting reviews where some customers would say that the fan is loud where others will say it's whisper quite? I think not only they filter but add their own comments to beef up the reviews.

I disagree on that. Quietness is a relative thing. And I honestly doubt that they edit comments.

I have noticed sometimes their reviews and ratings dont match up. Where do the ratings they use come from?
