Newegg "Refurb" CPU's - OC's that failed???

I'm curious if it's worth it to try and snag a Newegg "refurb" CPU. I have a feeling many of them could be units that were returned because they were poor overclockers and got returned or exchanged.

They could also be older stock whereas "factory fresh" would be at Intel's current speed distribution mix.

Does anyone have any insight???

id assume they would be older stock and possibly returns from those who think a socket a is the same as a super 7.
however being CO returns i couldnt tell you but if they are then they are who knows.

some of them are most likely bad ocers, not all though. i now the people who got in on the refurb 1700+ mostly got tbred A's

True, the reason for returning processors can vary greatly. Some people are dumb and buy an P4C chip for their B boards. Some people, like Shady said, disklike their steppings. Others overclock and can't push it so they send it back. And there are those tiny percentages of customers that buy a Barton 2500+ for their P4P800 board :p. Unless someone does a survey or some extensive research, there's no way you could tell.

back in april and may i bought at least 10 of the 1700+ refurbs from newegg (they were $35 each) and all of them were tbred-b and most were week 12 (2003) or newer and overclocked very nicely (this one i still use will run 2.5ghz... and the others that i tried all were able to run 100% stable at default multiplier and default voltage on a 166mhz fsb)

my guess was that most of there were bought buy guys who didnt realize till to late that their motherboard didnt support it
