Newegg refurb ATI AIW 9600 for $99- go for it or not?

even if it's just a bare card (last time I got an AIW from Newegg it was without accessories as described),
I have an AIW 8500 128MB and can use everything from that- so, is it worth it?

1. for gaming performance? I play a lot of BF1942/DC, and would like to start playing some City of Heroes maybe, or BF Vietnam, the new Doom, etc.
2. for video encoding , etc. ?
3. for adding HDTV to my desktop (there's some kind of kit, right?)?

thanks for the input, I'm short of cash at the moment so price is important at the moment or I'd
just get the higher level AIWs

Eh definately not the fastest card. I would just save for a 9800Pro. The 9600 probably wont last you too long. Might as well get a used 9700Pro and get a cheap PCI add on card.

The caveat with AIW 9600 is that if its a bare card and comes with no cables and accessories you won't be able to use it without purchasing the cable for AIW 9600 (no, your cables from the AIW8500 128 will not work)

Both VGA outputs are located on the multi-output cable thingie. Not hot IMO, get a AIW 9700/9800 refurb if you want to go that route, the AIW8500128 cables will work, and you can buy the YPbPr output cable later f you want.

hmm, well I want HDTV- canceled cable, so need to pick up the broadcasts (get nothing local
otherwise on tv)

the dvi adaptor won't work from the 8500? oh, just went and looked at the picture. the video/sound etc. are all in that weird bundle with the funky connector, instead of the same as the 8500... alright, will try
and sell some parts when I get home to save up for a better AIW

DVI isn't even supported on any AIW 9600 cards either. AIW won't help you "get" HDTV, but some models will let you "connect" to an HDTV using YPbPr using a cable or adaptor depending on the model.

To pick up OTA HD broadcasts, you need an antennae and an HDTV PC card, or STB tuner.

yes, but HD broadcasts for AIW need directX9, right, even with a pci card? my LCD is analogue, but the AIW came with the adaptor

With an "HDTV Wonder" tuner card, AIW can't tune HD broadcasts at all, however newer models based on r300 can work "with" an HDTV Wonder tuner card. You're mixing terms and hardware up.

I have a hardware HDTV tuner card that by-passes the graphic card altogether, no DX9 requirement at all, it just needs a PCI slot and a PC to do its thing.

And AIW 9600 won't, since it doesn't support DVI at all.
