Newegg - Pentium D 805 combo deals

I see that the PC CHIPS board actually has the best reviews, so I was going to disagree with you, but now I see that only the Gigabyte has a PCI-E slot. Just one more factor to consider.

I'm planning on building a couple computers for my family next Christmas, I hope we see some combo deals on Conroes like this in November-December.

Good deal, thanks OP.

Even a good deal for a home "Work" system. Non\Lite-Gamers and Power users would be better off with saving money on a cheep dual core CPU like this the CPU and getting more RAM. Then getting a CPU that costs more then the Combo + HSF. Visual Studio Even runs like a champ on a Pentium D (really need a dual core to keep that beast running quickly).

Looks like the Gigabyte board can handle Core 2 Duos ... but only with a max FSB of 800. Should be a good upgrade path to a E4x00 series on the cheep.

Office and Dev Apps run simply great on the Pentium D line.

Toss a 2 Gigs of DDR2 on there for @ $175-$200 (Don't even really need DDR2-6400)

$75-$125 PCIe Vid card on there and I'd bet it would run WoW like a champ. (7600GS/GT or X1650XT ... even a 7900GS or X1900GT if you catch a good sale)

yeah these make perfect cheap dual core PCs, I got one for my grandpa who does heavy photo, music, and dvding editing, mixing, burning, and converting. He loves it.

Just to add to the list Frys has the 805 with the ecs p4m800pro-m v2 for $78. Imagine what a POS the plain p4m800 non-pro non-M Ver-1 was 🙂 I hear part of the chipset is overclocked to begin with so I doubt it has much overclocking left in it. The 805 may not be such a hot deal if not overclocked. If you want dual core at any price $78 has to be the record. Anyone know if I can get up to 3.2 or 3.5ghz with this setup? Also I may use my old ddr memory for awhile. This has been Frys throw away MB for the last 2 months. They had the D820 combo for $90 and the E6300 combo for $150 and $170. I was hoping for the D820 deal again personally.

I have a P4M800Pro-M motherboard with the Pentium D 805 cpu. Very weak motherboard. I tried two different brands of DDR2 memory, both known to be good, and both failed on this motherboard. One would not boot, the other failed memtest almost immediately. I then tried DDR (PC3200, 2 x512), and that seems to work. The memory scores are really low, but it does work without errors. If you search, you can find others who have had the same experience.

The maximum stable overclock seems to be about 3.0 ghz -- this with a cpu that has run 3.4 ghz at default voltage on a better motherboard.

The onboard video is good enough for Office applications and surfing the web, it will not support Aero Glass.

I may jump on the frys deal. It should be a decent step up from my athalon 1800+. I'd just use my current ddr1 memory and 5200 video card. If it don't work I could just return it. Another concern is the heat and power use. My system runs 7/24 as my tivo.
Thanks HTNE

The Fry's ad in So Cal states the CPU is 3.4ghz. 🙁 In our dreams!🙂

I am almost positive that PC2700 will work just fine. The board however is capible of PC3200.

hah i never thought i'd still be able to use pc2700😛 thought i'd be up sh*t creek after ddr 2 came out long ago.

I got mine up to 3.7 ghz so far and thats with the ecs p4m800 so called junker. I havent even started tweaking voltages yet. Don't know how far this could go. I'm just an OC beginner.

The Intel 8xx chipsets support DDR1 (but they are older).

The Intel 9xx chipsets are newer and support DDR2.

hmmm, i was a bit weary of the 805 combo from frys, due to my last pentium-d 8xx experience. but for $80, how can you go wrong? 😀

well its a cheap cpu after all. but later on you can toss in a newer chip on this board, one of those core duos or whatever.
overclock it a bit and its not bad, even ifs single core aware game, not like your gonna have an 8800gtx on such a system after all. and in other apps, atleast windows will remain snappy while the other thing is crunching away
