Newegg has some refurb 775 CPUs in - in case you were looking

Seems kind of pricey to me but I guess if you need one.. Good range and variety though. How does one 'refurbish' a CPU, wipe the paste off? Anyone have experience with this?

Too high priced...I'd go with a used xeon 771 and the sticker mod if I had a mobo I new could do it.
 
Larry and I could compare our inventories of old LGA-775 systems. Since the "mainstreamers" in my family don't complain, I'll hold off upgrading their PCs for now.

In another thread on "Mem & Storage" I voiced some frustrations about the old onboard HDD controllers. I think -- for my own, personal systems -- I'm ready to junk my 775's except for my server -- for now.

I have this Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard mentioned implicitly in the other thread. I was thinking I could put in an SATA-III PCI-E controller: the X16 slot matches the 2.0 specification.

But -- "no cigar." It only has x1 slots remaining, and PCI slots. I need a slot that offers at least x2. Not worth the trouble.

I don't even think I'll try to sell it. Thank God, I know someone who would take it if I just gave it away . . . And if I offered the E8400 Wolfdale for sale? Hmmm . . . .
 
I was thinking of getting a new CPU, but with these prices i'm better off waiting until the new versions come out and get the reduced price of a fresh model.

Agreed. I've been buying/selling the odd 775 CPU here and there as most of the PCs I've refurbed for family members are on S775. Most of the older chips sell for basically pennies and the newer chips are in the $15-20 for dual core. No reason to pay Newegg for essentially ebay parts.
