Love the speakers deal, as reallyscrued said the sub is not worth it in my opinion as it has terrible range.

Newegg occasionally has the monitor 70s of sale for about 150 which is a stellar deal, the base on that trumps that stand alone bass.

moral of the story, don't cheap out on the bass.

Yeah if you can afford it I would wait until they have 70s for 150 again.

Just to make sure everyone knows though these speakers are sold per each and not by the pair.

yeah I agree the towers are decent the sub is so so but 69.99 is low cost.

I have an extensive speaker collection and have some very good subs/ speakers.

focals ,seas , scanspeak etc.

but the towers and that little sub for a 2.1 desk setup .

put the sub at your feet and the towers on the left and right of the desk. it would sound pretty good to many.

The question is, do they have anymore 70's left? I thought the new monitor series took over a few months back (55, 65, 75). I've got a pair of series II 70's in my home theater and they are awesome for the money, thinking about a pair of these 60's for my living room TV.

The 70s are back for $150 each, free shipping. They also have the "matching" CS2 center channel for $100, also free shipping.

Would it be ridiculous to use the 70s as fronts and the 60s as rear surrounds, with a cs2 center?

Assume you already have the 60s?

I think you should replace ridiculous with awesome

No, I'm currently using 15-year-old Wharfedale bookshelves as rears (on the floor, no stands, but far enough back from the sofa that the sound isn't blocked). 2x70s, 2x60s, and 1xCS2 would be $600 shipped on NE today...

The pair of 60s is $200...I could get a pair of 40s for $150, but by the time I buy stands I'd be paying at least as much as the 60s cost, so it's temping!

Those Polks are real power sinks, especially the 70s.

As long as you have enough power to drive them, that setup would sound awesome.

:hmm:

I can't honestly recommend buying an Onkyo. Too many problems as of late.

I already own it, and it's fantastic. The only problem was with improper 24p playback, and they released firmware to fix it after the community bitched and moaned. In terms of power, it shouldn't have a problem though I don't think at 135wpc (listed, anyway).

i have 70s for fronts with 30s for rear (i have a shelf built into the wall). and its pretty great for me. If I had the room I would do towers for rears. I would say go for it

Well, I'm glad you've had a good experience with it. I just remember that the 616 was a freaking disaster when it first came out. Maybe the higher-end models were spared the trouble.

Yeah, 135W should be enough to drive those 70s. You could probably also bi-amp them if you're just running 5.1.

No I'm sure you're right about the lack of QC before release, because there was a big uproar over the 24p issue. Only after ppl started writing negative reviews on Amazon and getting HT gurus involved on their blogs did Onkyo do something about it. And bi-amp is a good idea for the 70s at least. The room was redone last year and it's wired for 7.2 (in wall), but I haven't bothered to hang the surrounds yet or purchase the subs, so I'm leaning towards starting with this and seeing how I like it for the time being.

I own a few sets of the older Polk monitors (7's, 10's and SDA 2B's) and they are without a doubt the best bang for the buck speaker out there. Paid under a hundred bucks for each pair. Paired with a good amp it's music made in heaven.
