A co-worker pre-ordered a 9800 Pro directly from ATI and they called him this afternoon and said that they are shipping it as of today.

Amen man. My roommate put together an entire computer (minus monitor) for that. We use it as a mail/game server. You people must be executives.

so this is basically sorta like nvidia releasing the GF3 Ti500 after the GF3 since it's just an update and not a new line?

basically . . . sorta . . . yeah . . .

depends who you talk to . . . evidently it is a refresh of the R300 core with a few improvements in shaders and faster speed . . . the 9700 will be the "hot ticket" for awhile to come (in the ATI line). ;)

When the Catalyst 3.3 drivers are released, it will allow an overclocked Radeon 9700 to perform just as fast as a Radeon 9800 Pro.

Actually the 9800Pro will also suffer some improvement from Cat 3 so it will always stay ahead of the 9700Pro (ATI will see to that). :p

difference:

from HardOCP..
The default clock speeds of the 9800 Pro are 380Mhz core and 340Mhz (680Mhz DDR) memory.

The highest stable core overclock with no artifacts that I was able to reach is 440Mhz
The highest stable memory overclock with no artifacts that I was able to reach is 370Mhz (740Mhz DDR).
At these speeds the HSF remained only warm to the touch.

however
Because our card is a "Qualification Sample" overclocking could have different results on retail cards
This is an incredible overclock considering this is .15 micron technology.

So for all we know the retail cards will OC better or worse.........nobody knows.

But we DO know the 9800Pro will always be faster than the 9700Pro . . . ;)

Perhaps you should see someone about your "confusion" . . . we can help you if you let us.
Feel free to help clear up any "confusion".

I must've missed your comments in that thread that would've cleared up any confusion.

On the other hand, I've painted my PCB black, replaced the fan with a shiny silver parallelgram and changed the driver path and .sys files and found myself with a 380/340 stock clocked 9800pro. I've also got very real results that match-up nicely to published reviews of the 9800pro, so I guess the only "confusion" is whether 9700pros are underclocked 9800pros, or if 9800pros are overclocked 9700pros. :p
