newegg has 3850 now for $179

benchmark is a lie. How come real games don't show this same performance?

it's definitely slower than 8800gts/2900xt, but it's far faster than anything else in its price category right now. also, it is actually available for sale, unlike 8800gt and 3870.

considering price/performance, its competitive, better buy, cooler overall.

3850 beats 8800GT in Crysis demo in avg. FPS -> HArdOCP Test

Same with UT3 demo here ---> HardOCP again

I don't think 3850 can beat 8800gt, for the first comparation the 8800gt ran at resolution of 1600x1200 while 3850 ran at 1280x1024, but it will definately blow the 8600gts which is in the same price range with 3850.

It is a 8600gts killer. But that's not saying much, seeing how much that card sucked for the money it cost.

I'm sorry but the hardocp reviews are total garbage. They use different graphics settings on different cards then compare the fps number thinking they should somehow be similiar?!

For example if you look at the UT3 demo where the new ati card "beats" it you will notice that the ati card has NO AA or AF, while the 8800gt is running 2x AA and 16xAF! Which means the 8800gt would DESTROY the new ati card if if the AA and AF options were turned off.

and if you look at the crysis benchmark the ati card again "beats" the 8800gt, it is reviewed at 1280-1024 while the 8800gt is running at 1600-1200. How can you compare these two? This would be like having a race between a civic and a ferrari, but the ferrari can only use first gear.

Their methodology is just retarded in my opinion. It's almost as if they are trying to trick their readers.

The 8800gt is running at higher settings in both of those tests

yep. Hardocp is not the place to go if you want benchmarks.

Here is a good review of the 3850, granted it is the 'Xtreme' model but you get the picture- I'd like to see more crossfire performance numbers with the 3850 besides Anands' short test.

It will tell you what settings you can play comfortably with different types of cards however

The basis of their comparison is not fps but highest IQ at playable fps.

If you go into the review expecting to compare fps charts, then yes, it will appear silly.

Being different does not automatically make them worse. Confusing, perhaps. 😉

3850 reminds me of 1950pro, about same price (when it was first launched) and it can beat 1950pro/xt, 7900gt/s, 8600gts. I'm hoping it gets down to $150-160, then I'll buy 🙂

Wow, just got done reading anandtech's review. There is currently nothing that can compete with the 3850 for it's price range. $179 is a great deal for now until nvidia can match it.

hold tight until 8800gt 256 comes out. If it is clocked at the sames speed as the 512 mb version it is going to be a monster at lower resolutions.

yeah, hardocp actually has some pretty good reviews, but they're not conveniently put into a little chart that we can stare at and say "there, I told you that my 178901 gxxx2 is better than your crappy card!" It's great for determining if a specific game that you want to buy will do well on your system. Of course, I hate it
