Newegg: chargebacks will affect your credit score?

So I've been going around in circles with newegg on something they sold that's defective. They refuse to help citing it's the manufacturer's responsibility but the manufacturer says it's neweggs. I told newegg that if I don't get their assistance then it's chargeback time at which point they say:

"Also, please be advised if you issue a chargeback it will be reported to the credit bureau and will reflect your credit score."

Now, I don't really care- it's the principal of the thing, I'm going going to be left holding a piece of not working crap without a fight. But that seemed like a really strange reply, no?

Companies routinely lie if they feel it gains them any amount of leverage at all over a consumer. It's pretty silly in a case like this.

There's no way they could report it to the credit bureaus unless you gave them your SSN for some reason. The credit card company isn't going to give them your SSN either. It's an empty threat.

Well, technically it will reflect that the purchase was never made when your CC company reports their monthly statement to the agency. If you are building credit, you want to keep some sort of activity on your credit cards (~15-20% utilization or so generally). So, if the purchase is "never" made, the balance that would have been on your credit card is altered and, thus, may detriment your score if you have too low of utilization.

But AFAIK chargebacks aren't reported; it's a private issue for the CC company to deal with.

You probably just got a CSR that has been told misinformation in a non-job aspect of their life that carried over to their job; even if it were used as a psuedo-threat, it would not have even been made if the CSR were properly informed.

I love when people make things up. It's like the CSR has returns taken out of his/her paycheck. When people play the 'make things up game,' I like to join in with them.
