this one will run cooler and overclock better though ;)

*edit* the code is AXDA1700DLT3C, doesn't that mean it's Thoroughbred A???

Nevermind the picture, they haven't updated it in awhile. 99.9% of the people are getting either JIUCB or JIUHB chips, or some forms of Tbred Bs

Sick....when these go down to $30 I'll buy 3 just to try and kill 'em by OCing ;)

people are getting B days ago so i guess you may still be lucky.

I bought two at 1:00 and they were $49.99 - Should I call and ask for the $6.00 refund, or do they even have a price guarantee?

Hehe anyone who has bought a Duron in the past year and a half should hang their head in shame ;)

Last December I bought a new mainboard and returned it with no 15% stocking fee... on 1/13/2003 I returned a mainboard from the refurbished section... they charged 15% restocking fee! :|

Okay dudes and dudettes... I'm leaning towards the Intel Celeron 1.7 with a P4S5A/DX+ mobo for $117... it would run pretty quiet but probably wouldn't be the best value...

Anyway, if I can find me a really really quiet fan yet still let me overclock the 1700+, I want to pair it up with a K7S5A/K7S5A Pro...
What I'd like to know is if OCing this with the limited OCing capabilities of the K7S5A is possible to push the chip to its limits air-cooled?
Also, in case I get a board that supports DDR333... would it be worth the extra $10? Right now I"m looking at the GC-68 HSF from SVC... I can get it shipped for under $10... plus I can try what was previously suggested (replacing the fan with an NMB with like 20dba)... but not sure if anyone has gotten that combo to OC safely up to 2GHz...

Overclock + K7S5A = Not Likely
Underclock + K7S5A + Possible Suicide = Much More Likely

What's your budget? Considering an equally clocked Celeron over a T-bred wouldn't be wise.

I know that a K7S5A can overclock but there are only limited settings available... so I'm just hoping the available settings are the ones I need to hit 2GHz...

My budget is to try to keep the Mobo/CPU/HSF combo at around $120 or less... Definitely the AMD route is going to get me more bang for my buck... but I don't know if I want to feel like i'm on an airplane when at my computer... somewhere between barely audible and I can't hear a damn thing is what I want though...

Nono! Don't do like you mentioned earlier, the Celeron 1.7 is sloooow. It's faster than my old 300A oc'd to 450, but my AMD XP1600+ can run circles around the Celeron 1.7.

Also, why K7S5A? I had one, and it was buggy. I highly recommend spending $5 more to get the Shuttle AK32A. It has the KT266A chipset which is slightly faster than the SiS735 AND it supports PC100/133 SDRAM too if that's what you're after. The AK32A has Multiplier, FSB, and Voltage settings in BIOS so if you unlock your chip, sky's the limit.
I sold my K7S5A and replaced it with the AK32A and so far I've been quite pleased.

OK, I've been waiting to upgrade my Duron 950 on a K7S5A for about 6 months now. Was looking at the 2000+ or the 2100+, but was waiting for the next price cut...whenever that may be (just after I buy, no doubt). Do yall think this would be a better steal, er deal, I want this upgrade to be my system for at least another year or so, so I dont wanna hafta turn around and buy again...Not planning on building a new PC for a couple years (unless I win the lottery).

So, is the 1700+ at $47 better than the 2000+ at $75 (or whatever the price may drop to)?

Dude,
forget about the word celeron. It really means celery, and you know what is in celery... nothing. Really, they s*ck.
An xp1700 nonoverclocked will smoke any celery made, and should do anything you want easily. Remember, much waiting today pc-sise is due to HDD I/O anyway. Your celery will likely not be running on rdram1066 so memory speed is moot as an issue - in fact prolly better for amd-based systems if you see below.
Buy the 1700 and an nforce2 board (asus or epox) at a good price and you will be set up for the Barton this spring with no upgrade needed (next gen athon with bigger cache) if you decide to later (at this price for the 1700 chip who cares! if you swap it in 3-6-24-?? months). This should be a good investment in hardware (mobo or shuttle and ram), as it should last you for a long while as far as this industry goes. I use a tower, but if my needs werent so great (and I didnt have two pcs and a laptop already) I would get the new shuttle nforce2 board in a heartbeat. See posts for deals on this. It is at/near the bleeding edge and is really cool and small. Even though I have only played with one for a couple hours, I have followed this and read reviews and I would highly recommend it if you only need one HDD and one cd/dvd/combo/other.
hope that wasnt too much ....

*current definition debatable.
