Anyone have any idea why newegg has put their price up on the 1.6a? It's now $160 when it was $153 before. The 1.8a is only $165 thats only $5 more. I'm guessing the 1.8a is slightly more overclockable than the 1.6a right? Tell me if i'm wrong please.

Someone said about Intel lowering their prices on 1st September, is this right? That blows cus i'm gonna be buying a few days before that only. :( Unless I buy everything accept the CPU in america then ship that across seperately, but then I can't test the system in the states while im there :<

Too many decisions, oh no, another AMD site swaying me to the dark side....

Aaaaarrrg.

From what i've read and seen ppl achieving on this forum the 1.6A is more overclockable or easier to overclock and reach a higher percentage increase over stock than a 1.8A. This is most likely due to the multiplier of only 16x as opposed to 18x as well as other factors. If you look around on here there is definately a higher success rate with a 1.6 over the 1.8, although that dosen't mean you could'nt push a 1.8 to the max... it's a bit of luck in the end

I also noticed the price increase of the 1.6 in the UK right before they all sold out everywhere :(

Forgot to mention about the pricing -

Supply and Demand

Short Supply + High Demand = Higher Price commodity

Unfair ? but seems generally excepted... ppl will pay the price

Nooo, you have it backwards, Intel is the Dark Side! ;) Btw, the price on the 1.8As dropped, so they are now a mere $1 more than a 1.6A...decisions, decisions.

1.6a are more overclockable now. wait a few months and the 1.8a will be the best overclocker.

Can I have ur 1.6a pls :D /jk

I've now found a sneaky place selling AGOIA specific XP1600 chips hehe.

For the price difference between an XP1600 and a 1.6a I could get some amazing air cooling... MB is cheaper for XP's too generally.

*A plan forms*

True...but likely you will only reach 1800mhz or 2200+....Most 1.6's can do 2.4ghz at default and need nothing more then retail hsf!!!....2200+ and 2400 with 600fsb will be a dead heat likely....

Do the math...possibly no vcore boost needed, not as much heat concerns, and a lot quiter of a system....

Chances are with the 1.6a you could do more!!!! MIne is not even the best!!!

EDIT: Actually I overstated myself....Tomshardware review (the one where they oc'd the 2200+ to like 2380+ levels)

~ 27 tests......

The p4 2.4 (533fsb) won 21 of those test.....(78%)

The 2200+ (266fsb) won 6 of those test....(22%)

the 2380+ (284fsb) won 11 test or only (40%)

cadd and gaming the xp 2200+ will be there...a lot of other things appear to be more optimized for p4...

I feel like an idiot. Yesterday i ordered a 1.6A from newegg for $160. Right after i got my tracking number i see that the 1.8A was only 5 dollars more. doh. I hope this 1.6A overclocks good. I originially bought a used p4 1.6A through a forum but the sender didnt pack it, he just sent the retail box inside a bag. so by the time it get here the cpu had more then a few bent pins. so i sent it back and ordered a 1.6A from newegg.

tekviper,

My gut tells me if you get around same packing date they likely will peak out around the same....

The advantage of the 1.6 is that the fsb will be a lot higher to reach same point...That being said it also can be a disadvantage if you have a mobo that gets flaky at a certain high fsb, usb controller stops working, mobo lacks agp/pci lock and things get too far out of spec, and ram can't go that high or mem ratios can't take advantage of it....

I myself would like a 1.8a (which will be coming)....I would like to run 2.7ghz but only need 150fsb to do it...That way I can run my 400+ mhz ddr. With my 1.6 I am way above the 150fsb and the ram will not run or run near reliably...

Duvie, I've been thinking sort of the same thing, and once the results start coming in I may have to grab a 1.8a...:)

Course I'll have to ask the boss....:frown:

I'm going to get a 1.8a i've decided as you need less of an fsb overclock to reach 2.4 which is nice. I've ordered 256mb of pc2100 High performance level 2 Cas 2-2-2 timed memory. The only test ive seen for this memory got up to 185mhz on 2-2-2 timings and 210mhz on slow ones so it should be ok. The site did have lots of mushkin articles however, and I think they may have sponsored the site.

1.8a should see me to 2.4ghz I think.

Arg, prices for stuff just keep going up on my list >:

Thanks, Mark

The multiplier on the 1.8A will remain the same, but as yield improve, so will the overclocking abilities of the 1.8A.

Yeah it all boils down to supply and demand. They are discontinuing the 1.6A and lots of people want it so the prices go up. It may be worth it to get the 1.6A even at the same price as the 1.8A because you will get a higher fsb when you overclock due to the lower multiplyer. This is good for the p4 especially in games, woot!

Supply and demand... I grabbed one when they were $147 shipped.... but I got the dud... either that or my PowerSupply is underpar (Antec 303). I ordered a 420watt Turbolink, hopefully that will let me get more than 1.6 stable out of my 1.6a!!!!

I wish the Intel multiplyer was adjustable so you could stay at the same speed but increase the fsb. One of the only faults the p4 has.
