The new Athlon 64 FX processor, codenamed Newcastle, supports dual channel DDR memory and will boast 256KB of L2 cache, instead of 512KB as reported previously. The new processor will be available at speeds ranging from 1.8GHz to 2.4Ghz.
A number of you have written in about this Digitimes story on Newcastle. They claim the L2 cache will be 256KB, but AMD has told me it has the same features as the Athlon 64 3000+.
Dear Reader,
Correction: In a February 26 article, we incorrectly termed AMD's Newcastle CPU the "new Athlon 64 FX" and stated that it will "boast 256KB of L2 cache." It should be the new Athlon 64 with a 512KB L2 cache in common with the Athlon 64 3000+ (reduced from the 1MB L2 cache in the Athlon 64 3200+).
