Hello,
I need to change the harddrive (internal) in my desktop - a dell 8200, and was trying not to go for pricey solution, or which would need a lot of technical knowhow.

Is it possible - to install a hard drive mobile rack - and alternate between two Hard drives - acting as the Primary (and sole) internal harddrive?

I was looking at the following stuff -
StarTech ATA 100 Black Removable Hard Drive Drawer (Metal)/ Frame w/ Fan
SNT127ABK
link: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attr...age_id=351&form_keyword=snt127abk&rd=1

or

Kingwin KF-21 Hard Drive Mobile Rack ATA 66/100/133 & Fan

link: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=1011502&search=KF21IPF

I don't know if it is possible for the primary Internal drive to be easily switchable (like alternating two different primary HD with their own operating system etc) using the rest of the system. Or, if these are meant only for a second hard drive, with the primary being a fixed/nonswitchable one ?

BTW, this is my first post here. I am hardly better than dumb about computers. Have browsed the forums here for past few days to get an answer, but could not find. I will appreciate if you could answer, or even direct me to some thread already existing, and please bear with this newby questions.

My existing HD is a Maxtor ATA 133, IDE. Seems the replacement will need to be compatible with the older broader ribbon connectors ( not a SATA ?! I guess)
I am planning to get the West. Digital WD 1600 JBRTL going on sale now.

My other question is -
Are their any compatibility issues between my existing system, and the new harddrive? I don't want to be too fussy, but have no idea how simple (or hard) this is - so the question.

I hope someone can help me from this confusion.

Thanks in advance.

Well, by broader - I meant broader than the SATA.

I may be wrong - but I thought my existing HD (Maxtor 6L040J2) is a 40 pin 80 conductor type.

(I looked into the Maxtor's website out of curiosity - the only place where I got my info from, here is a link http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_.../diamondmax_plus_d740x_quick_specs.pdf )

Either way - as long as the present connector fits properly with the newer drive, it should take care of the problem.

My main confusion is with the Hard drive Rack/Tray system.
