Newby needs Advice:Are the DDR based boards/RAM worth waiting for?

I'm getting ready to build my first PC. Since I'm only a light gamer and have no need to overclock, I've settled on a low-cost Duron approach. Looking to maybe match a Duron 750 with an MSI K7T Pro board. I was going to spend $105 on PC-133 RAM.

I keep hearing about DDR based boards being just around the corner and am not sure if I should wait for these and DDR RAM or move ahead with my plan. Ho wmuch more is a DDR board gonna cost? How about 128 MB of DDR RAM?

Thanks!

It should cost slightly more. Not as much as Rambus of course 🙂. I would expect a 10-20% premium at first.

Don't expect a whopping performance gain from DDR. Early benchmarks indicate a gain anywhere from 8-15%.

So if you're the typical gamer that runs at a high resolution and get a average of 60fps in Quake3 at 1024*768, with a DDR improvement of 15%, you're looking at about 69fps or a 9fps difference. Are you going to notice an extra 9fps? I highly doubt it.

You'd be better off spending money on other bottlenecks in your system before shelling out money on DDR. Extra memory and a fast harddisk such as the IBM Deskstar 75GXP will do wonders for improving overall system performance. Don't forget to get a decent video card as well.
