Hello guys, I am looking to buy my first car (been using a "hand me down" this whole time). This G35 coupe I saw on craigslist seems like a really good deal, what do you guys think?

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ctd/2484803786.html

Also I want to be really thorough in buying a used car, what suggestions does everyone have in regards to getting the vehicle inspected by a third party beforehand? This car is located about a 2 hour drive from me. Should I contact local mechanics who will do an inspection for a fee? Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Charlie

A lot of people swear by the VQ35. It's got great power/l ratio and very reliable. My brother has a G35 that he wouldn't trade for anything else.

I... just... can't... stand the tractor engine sound.

Every VQ35 makes this sound, so I am assuming it is the engine rather than the intake/exhaust design. I hear this in the M35, FX35, Maxima, Altima 3.5. It is driving me crazy.

But, if you like the sound, by all means, the G35 is a decently reliable car for a sporty/cruiser.

You mean when its at idle?
My VQ35's always had what I assumed was an injector noise... Always ran just smooth and powerful as can be.. They are just killer engines.
Even my new Honda makes a ticking at idle, which is 100% normal for that engine.

During acceleration. The harder the acceleration, the more tractor-ish the sound.

Thats a pretty good price.. a couple years ago I got my 2005 for 18k with 35k miles on it. Same color, but I have the black interior.

Make sure the spark plug wells are free of oil. Mine had some at around 66k miles and I was able to get the dealer to replace them under warranty. Oil consumption may also be an issue, but you'll have to get on it right away since the mileage is close to the end of the powertrain warranty. If you can, take a look at the lower control arm bushings as well. I had one that was shot around 65k (that could be due to a few track days and a dozen autocrosses though).

As for the inspection, maybe get one of the local mechanics over at http://g35driver.com/forums/northern-california/336793-norcal-local-mechanics-help-thread.html to go with you? I know Bythebay (Eugene) is recommended by quite a few of the local people. There's a couple from Sac as well.

+1 on power and reliable and noise.

remember with these motors the MPG sucks balls. I haven't put much into my G other then normal maintence parts.

let me preface by saying I have a Z...

the 'tractor' noise people complain about is a freakin' joke. whoever complains about it must be driving a Rolls before experiencing the VQ... and be quite the automotive conisour. they have a unique sound, but I would never call it harsh or tractor-like.

MPG do not suck balls. My Z will pull 25+ mpg on the highway running 15+ psi and with dropped compression motor. the MPG is average.

to the OP.. the deal looks OK. nissan paint is sh!tty so you can tell pretty easily how well cared for the car is just by looking at the paint. In the pics, it looks like swirl city. Other than that, look at the service records and I think you should be fine

Excellent thank you guys for the feedback. One thing that concerns me is that the car doesn't have an aux input for my music player. How hard is it to install one (I'm looking on g35driver for tips)?

How fast are you going? I pull ~25MPG only when I set the cruise to 70. Only have a 5/16ths spacer and z-tube/rev-up airbox for the engine.

Wish I could help you there.. I had a guy do my stereo and went with a double-din nav unit.

I did not notice any problems with MPG's either.. I was happy with the mileage my Maxima got considering its size and power. I never did an actual calculation but I regularly got over 400 miles on tanks of gas with some city driving involved.

That price seems a little high.

i agree.

the 1st gen g35 coupes should not cost this much. i had an 05 one... and i remember people would basically make an aux port using the cd changer input on a lot of these older cars.

but $18k is a lot especially with 62k miles on it. i'd say $15-16k and maybe it'd be reasonable.

the first gen G35s (and even the new ones) are horrible gas hogs too. granted i drove in gridlock a lot in my G35 (lived in LA at the time) but you could easily see 14-15mpg combined in that car as it never lived up to its EPA numbers.

best I ever got in it was maybe 24mpg on a completely freeway drive with no traffic from LA to santa barbara.

That said, gas milage aside it is a great car to drive. the exhaust note on the first gen is great. i do have to say though that first gen G35 coupes are pretty coarse and loud, and not exactly what i'd call a real luxury car. its more like a 350z with 2 crappy seats in the back.

i do have to agree that nissan paint is shitty. my G35 was ivory pearl. and after maybe 4-5 months the paint on the metal parts of the body vs the plastic parts (like bumper covers) you could notice the plastic parts started to look slightly darker. that seemed pretty terrible, though maybe it was just that particular color because of the pearl effect stuff.

Yea I was about to ask if these have some reason to stay that high seeing that it is 5years old and has over 60k.
