how far can i O/C the Athlon XP 1800 CPU without adding in extra fans [i plan to get the ThermalTake Volcano 7, 256 PC2700 DDR ram]

i also plan on getting the MSI TI4400 card.. how far could i go without adding in extra fans?

do i need to ever open up the case to change anything to O/C the Vid card or CPU or can it done thru software and stuff?

also 1 more thing... how many watts do u think is needed for my computer?? (not sure what info you need, just ask)

thanks in advance!!!!

Couple questions:

What stepping is your 1600+? (i.e.,AGOGA, AGOIA, AROIA)
What HSF are you using? (HINT: If your answer is "stock AMD HS/F" you will absolutely have to get a new HS/F before you start overclocking)
What "thermal interface" are you using? (HINT: If your answer is either "thermal pad" or "I don't know" (which almost certainly means you're using a thermal pad) then you will need to buy some Arctic Silver III thermal paste)
What motherboard do you have?
What else do you have in your computer? (i.e., list all the various drives and PCI cards you have) Most likely, unless you have several HDs or other power-sapping components, a 300-330w PSU should be plenty.

Good points. Also:
-You can oc the Ti4400 through software. Just push the slider.
-You can oc the Athlon in the bios. Increase the fsb. If you want to increase the multiplier, you have to physically mod the chip, but it's not that big a deal. If you can thread a needle, you can mod the chip. Should take less than 30 minutes.

"What stepping is your 1600+? (i.e.,AGOGA, AGOIA, AROIA)"
Where do I check which stepping my computer is?

"What HSF are you using? (HINT: If your answer is "stock AMD HS/F" you will absolutely have to get a new HS/F before you start overclocking)"
What is a HSF?

Would I absolutely need this if I plan to o/c minor levels? I'm not very good at crackin open the case and changing stuff.... or I'm just scared.. haha

"What motherboard do you have?"
MSI MS-6380E KT3 Ultra

Yea I don't have much extra on my computer.. 300 should be fine i think!.. Thanks!

Hey would I need a extra fan if i just O/C the video card OR cpu a little bit?

Thanks!!

hsf = heatsink fan, you probably wont need additional cooling for your vid card

i plan to get the ThermalTake Volcano 7,

No you don't! This is definitely not the best hsf for overclocking, even a $6 svc-gc68 will outperform a v7. The v7 is about $18 if you know where to buy, but for $7 more, you can get the ax-7, a better hsf

really.. why does the V7 suck so much..
i suppose the V6's are worse? hehe... is the Coolermaster DP5/6l31C good? or should i get the one ya recommened? =P

and.. how far do u think i could go without extra cooling on the TI4400

thanks!

Its listed on the CPU itself.

I suppose you could do a very minor OC that's not really worth doing with just the thermal pad. Anything beyond that, and you will absolutely need ASIII, it will significantly lower your CPU temps.

You shouldn't need any extra cooling to OC the video card. Only a few people modify their video cooling. A Ti4400 should OC to at least 4600 speeds, maybe higher.

If you plan on trying to push the CPU, get a thermalright AX-7 heatsink, and a good 80mm fan (maybe an Enermax Adjustable or Panaflo L1A). If you're only going for a mild OC, get the cheaper SVC GC68 or SVC Golden Gate, either of which can be had for less than $10.
