Newbie with RAID...is RAID for me?

Hey, everyone. I am building a new machine using the Asus CUSL2 motherboard. Since I'm going to be using 2 harddrives, 3 cdroms, etc, I need more expansion. So, I am looking at this card here. It's from Promise and looks good, by my standards. I've never used RAID before at ALL. First off, I'm planning on using (2) IBM 45GB 7200RPM ATA100 HDDs to start out with, but plan on (4) later (all identical). With my first two drives, would it be best to have one HDD as Master on each chain or as one Master and one Slave on only one chain? Also, is RAID even necessary in the first place? I have looked at a few Promise ATA100 Non-RAID controller cards for about half the price of this one. I don't plan on doing video editing or anything serious like that, but I just want optimum performance as well as stability. I've heard that IDE RAID doesn't boost system performance at all, just a tiny bit, but since I've never used RAID, I really can't talk with any background experience. If I do end up going with RAID, how do I format the harddrives? I'm use to just putting in my bootable floppy and typing in "format c:". I don't plan on partitioning the drives, just basically combining them into one big 90GB virtual partition with only RAID 0. I'm not so sure if RAID is for me, since I'm not a hardcore HDD user, just want my Win2k to go a little faster and to have programs load faster as well. If I got the regular ATA100 card from Promise, would it be best to start with one drive as Master on each chain, since I'm starting with only (2) harddrives? I don't know if doubling the price of the regular ATA100 card is worth it or not??? What are you guys' opinions and experiences with IDE RAID 0???

One more thing...the link to the Non-RAID version of the Promise Adapter is here.

Thanks for your help and input!

While for me, RAID is not necessary or justified for purchasing another hard drive, if you already getting 2 hard drives, i would go for it.
