Newbie widescreen gaming question

Aren't games (e.g., WoW) generally 4:3 - how do they play on widescreens? The usual choices of blacked out sidebars or a distorted wide picture?

If you have a widescreen monitor and the game supports 16:9 I can't imagine why 4:3 would be preferable. WoW has widescreen support, BTW.

only older games and BF2, FEAR dont have widescreen support -- but they can be forced to work. FEAR is perfect widescreen but BF2 uses a sort of zoom -- albeit it is 1:1

Older games (such as Diablo 2, one of my favs) only support 4:3 resolutions. The picture looks slightly distorted, but it isn't anything to cry over.

Gotcha, older games have the black bars or distortion, newer ones work ok.

Do you actually see more in WoW? Seems like an edge in PvP etc.
