Newbie want to overclock XP2500+

Hi I know there has been many of these overclocks already, but I am a first time overclocker wannable....
So please bare with me!

This is my system I built last night:
Abit NF7-S rev2.0 (bios18)
XP2500+ (AQXDA?) - Damn I forgot to specify for that AQXEA stepping.... I thought that's what all the stores have right now...
OCZ 512MB DDR400
Vantec Aeroflow w/OCZ Ultra II
Radeon 9500 pro
Antec Lanboy with 2 bestcooler LED fans (front & back)

I have not overclocked anything yet...
CPU temps:
IDLE: 40C
Stress test with Prime95: 46.5C

Is this too high?? I am afraid I can't get up to 3200+ speeds with temps like these...

The Vantec Aeroflow spins at around 5114-5273-5444rpm.
Is this speed automatically adjusted by the motherboard?
Can I crank it up to the specified speed of 5600rpm?

I am sure I applied a VERY thin layer of the OCZ stuff....

Case temps:
IDLE: 30C
Stress: 34C

Also my room is pretty cool right now.... any thoughts on the temps?

Also how long should I wait before I start overclocking?? And how long should I keep running Prime95?
I heard you need to wait for the CPU and the thermal paste to settle in first.

Any other test I should run b4 attempting to overclock?

My aim is (200x11) for 3200+ speeds but should I do this gradually?
Can someone suggest some intervals for me to try?

So after I increase the speed should I run Prime95 to check if the system is stable?
If it's not stable do I increase the Vcore? By what increment?

Also do I need to mess with the voltage for the RAM?
It's at 2.62-2.64 rite now.

those temps are pretty high for a non overclocked system
is that a cheesy 13$ heatsink ??


the 2500+ cpu's hit 3200+ speeds often but usually they have those temps after the overclock


 
As far as overclocking... I'd set the FSB at 200 and the multiplier at 9... run Prime95 for 20 minutes... FSB instability usually shows up within 20 minutes. If it runs without errors... increase the multplier .5 at a time until it fails Prime95... then increase the voltage by .025... run Prime95 again... increase multiplier again, stability permitting. Keep doing this until you either reach 1.750 volts, or temps go above 60. At that point I would stop and do more intense stability testing... like leave Prime95 running while you loop 3DMark2001 for about an hour. If it's still running after an hour, consider it stable enough for now... if it has pooped out, you can either try increasing voltage another .025, or reduce the multiplier and test for stability again. A lot of people will say you can run the voltage at 1.850 without problems. That may be true... but I prefer to stay at or below 1.750
Once you're satisfied with your overclock... do a longer term stability test, run Prime95 with 3DMark looping again overnight.

But yeah... that's the process I go through when I get a new processor.
 
i just don't like the idea of running an athlon over 50c continuosely

but that's just me


if it does get too hot you can always settle for just a fsb/mem overclock

Are you talking diode or socket temps? =) It makes a difference... my socket temp says 47... diode says 53... and that's while running SETI@Home with my XP2500 @ 2.3 Ghz on 1.700 volts.
 
i'm talking about the abit nf7-s and the temps that are reported in the bios and with the winbond hardware monitor
i had that board and my temps were much lower
 
depending on the bios version, the NF7 reads as much as 8-10C high. i'm getting an enermax panel w/ dual temp monitors and fan controls. i don't believe my CPU temp is 47C when the HS is not even warm. i'm going to place 1 probe on the cpu and another on the NB. go to amdmb.com forums and check out the abit threads.
 
OK I just did the overclock after updating to bios18.

In the bios it gave me the following choices for CPU operating speeds:
User Defined
XP2500+
XP3200+

So I just set it to XP3200+, and it automatically sets it at (200x11).
I didn't mess with the Vcore. RAM was at DDR400 2-3-3-7.
The chip was recognized as XP3200+ during following bootup.

I ran Prime95 for about an hour now.... seems like there's no error.

Temps increased a bit at full load:
Case: 37C
CPU: 49C

Is this OK???

I think the Lanboy case is pretty bad at cooling... 37C for case temp is pretty bad 🙁
 
Take into account your room temperature too. Your CPU temps are totally fine, especially with those case temps. But I wouldn't sweat about it.

i wish my 2500+ and nf7-s would have done that
looks like you got some good parts there


 
Unfortunately this case only has slots for 2 fans.... front and back.

I am just worried about what will happen in SUMMER.... the weather will get so much hotter than it is right now...

Maybe I'll have to turn down the overclock or look at a bigger case with more airflow 🙁
 
yeah their rated in the ballpark of 80 or 90c before the chips actually kill themselves
high temps over a long timeframe only cut down on the life of the cpu but it won't "fry" it right away
although overclocks do become unstable well before you hit those max rated temps
