Newbie to networking - best setup for a server and software.

I have been building home systems for about 3 years+ now. I have not done anything with servers, only home systems. A friend asked me to replace his server. It is running w2k server for 10 user license. I just wanted to ask if the following setup would do well to replace his PIII-833 server: ECS K7S5A PRO with a 2000 +XP, 1 gig of DDR and an ultra 80 gig maxtor hard drive. I wanted to put an extra nic card and a low end (4-16 mb) video card. He asked me about intel, but I NEVER build intel and would hate to start now. Hardware wise, will this configuration be ok??

Next could someone help point me to useful sites on configuring/setting up W2000 server?? and will W2000 professional drivers work with W2k server (I would assume so).

Thanks in advance for any help!!

The "Strength" of the Server depends on the size of the network and what is the typical use. In many cases (of small networks) even a P-III-833 with a lot of memory and fast HD would be good enough.

Info about Win2000 server configuration can be found here:

Windows 2000 Server.

This just one link snoop around this site and you will find most of the basic info needed for Win2000sever.

With 10 CALs, his network cant be that large. It could be that his current server is fine for what he needs. Hae you done a baseline? Right click my computer > manage > Performance Logs and Alerts > Counter Logs >

From there you can setup timers to record usage of any system resouce. I had a client that wanted a new $3000 server with 120GB of HD space, but their current 800Mhz with 40GB was hardly being used.

If he's upgrading anyway, those specs dont seem bad if he wants to spend the money. Microsoft has alot of information on windows 2000 server on their site.

Thanks for the help, I will look at the performance level. Since the hdd is getting filled up, that hdd upgrade may be all it needs.

I guess it depends on the server and its users but that configuration scares the crap out of me 😀 As few problems as I've had with ECS boards, its still not a server mobo and lacks many features that could be handy. My main crying point though is that big ide drive waiting to fail. I like scsi and raid. If scsi is too expensive I still strongly encourage raid. How about a backup solution? Now would be a good time to teach him to use a tape drive to store that data incase of a disaster too! 🙂
