Newbie to ipod

Thinking about getting my wife the new ipod shuffle. My question is this, can I load it with any songs that I have on my computer or it has to be from itunes or directly from cd?? Thank.

As for me, I only got one and I sent it back.
You cant just drag files over to the drive. You have to sync them with special software.
No good. All my other players were a lot easier to use. Had a couple of MSI's and a Creative.
Got the chance to mess with a friends Rio. It also required their special program. (Not sure if thats still the situation.)

iTunes can supposedly rip music from your CD's but I wouldnt know. Never got that far. I do know that the default format is NOT mp3. I think its AAC or something like that.
