I'm installing DSL at home today and I'm wondering whether it would be necessary for me to build a server to run our home network. There will be 4 computers installed on the DSL and previous experience I've had with DSL is that I tend to have restart it once in a while because it would tend to stall on me. Issue I'm having is that the main DSL connection is going to be installed on my parents desktop which is located in their bedroom. I don't want to have to bother them at night incase it fails and whatnot.

Any suggestions as to what would be the best setup to go with. Is it normal for me to have to reset the DSL once in a while due to it losing connection?

Thanks!

Server has nothing to do with it. You need a DSL router and that will aloow you to have a peer-to-peer network and share the DSL connection with minimal cost and effort (can be had for under $50)

Get a cheap router that does the connection reset for you.
Linksys 4port 10/100 router/switch now go for like $40, with 802.11b wireless add 20-30 bucks.

I think for some DSL drops happen, it used to happen to me when I had DSL, but after I got a router (netgear) i dont have to manually switch anything on or off. You configure all your authetication settings on the router, and routers should have the capability to reset the connection on-the-fly through their configuration manager which you can access on a web browser. With the router you won't even need a server and share the dsl connection across all your computers.

That part is understood. I do have a router. Wouldn't the router have to be setup with a computer to act as a centralized computer for the entire network first? Sorry...I'm still trying to get a grasp on how it all works.

Can I just install the router at an accessible place in the house and then disperse the connection throughout the different computers?

Awesome! Thanks for that info!

dsl modem---router----pc's

No need for central server, that would be for a client/server architecture and u dont need it.

You can network all of your computers using the router (also has builit in switch for this purpose)

Your network is now called peer-to peer as each PC is a peer to the others on the network, their is no main server to log into with the client pc's. You can share all of the HD's, files, etc that you like on any of the pc's for the network.

U can access the router like mentioned before by typing in it's LAN ip addy on any internet explorer browser that is connected to it.
