NEWBIE ??? Removing GlobalWin Fan/HS

Senior member
Greetings all,

My first post on Anandtech (member for 6 mo's but can never remember Login info).

I sold my processor w/ HS&Fan on E-Bay. Can any of the more technically savvy folk out there tell me how to take a heatsink (GlobalWin - basic $15 HS off. I see plenty of posts about putting HS ON T-Bird Skt.A, but can't find instructions for socket 370. Guidance would be much appreciated...

Also is it possible to remove H/S and processor all at once (i.e. I would like to keep the HSink attached to the processor when I send it to the purchaser so that she doesn't have to hassle with it, potentially fry the chip, and then ask for money back (which is already spent on Epox 8k7T.

Glad to be onboard and thanks for any tips.

Anybody out there...I could use some advise as this is my first time disassembling (proc. from M/B at any rate)...

I do not believe it is possible to remove the processor and hs simultaneously. As for how to do it....little prong thingers attached to the mother board socket deally...undo them suckers. right.

ok, there will be one long and flat metal rod running through your heatsink. there are 2 ends. one end is curved, and fits onto one end of the "tooth" and cannot be bent. the other end has a little swivel like head that looks like the first curved end, but with one big difference. you must push down on the swivel end, while unlaching the hook from the "tooth." just take a look at the heatsink, you'll get what i'm saying. sorry if this sounds crude, but this task isnt nearly as difficult as putting that mofo on your socket.

and NO, you can't remove the cpu and heatsink, unless you have a slot cpu. but you have a socket, so it's not possible.

No, you cant remove them together. Push down on the top of the swivel side of the clip lightly while un-hinging the clip attatched to the socket tang, just be careful and all should be good.

Thanks for the tips. I'm working on it but the prob is I can't get the latch out from under the lip on the socket. It seems pressing downwards isn't enough. It looks like I need some lateral pressure too. Gouged my Mobo once already, hopefully no damage done.

Anyway, cheers for the tips and I'll see if I can't better implement them.

ahh, just use your fingers you pansy!!! hah, jk, but anyways, i sure as hell wouldn't dare to use a screwdriver to put on/take off a heatsink.

I use a screwdriver, but only on hs with nice screwdrivery places (like thermaltake ones). I gouged an mb with the stock AMD hs. thankfully no damage (that I know of) done.

Well the job is done. Thanks for the help (and the insults 🙂 After all the talk about pressing down on both sides when applying HS, I thought you had to do same removing, but as you guys said, all the work is done on latch, swivel end.

I'll see you on the boards nd I owe you guys a beer if passing through Austin, TX (1/2 pint for the fellow w/ the"pansy" comment 🙂
