I never realized how many things I didn't know until I started putting this my first try at building a PC together. So far I have new case with 320 watt PS, KK266 MotherBoard, 1.13 Tbird with factory heat sink and fan, a 256 MB PC133 DIMM, Prime Peripherals 10x DVD, ancient Teac 1.44 floppy (red stripe goes toward power connector and must use master connection instead of slave), with 2 Quantum IDE drives, 20 GB master primary and 2.1 GB master secondary (with DVD as slave).

Problem is that I can't get any of the Windows 98 CDs going. TurboLinux on CD worked fine (except I am sure I screwed up some step), but my W98se update, and my slightly less official looking W98 full install, both give a can't boot error, put in a good disc and hit return. My old W95 boot floppy works great, but I can't figure out any drive letters for my Hard drives. dir c: gives me invalid drive message.

Help

I have downloaded a boot98SE.exe, but haven't run it to make the boot floppy (no working PC was handy). I have also downloaded a page of instructions from Microsoft on transfering the 98SE CD to the harddrive before running it.

pull the floppy, second hd, and any other extra stuff you have, like sound card, nic, stuff like that. have only the master hd, v/c and dvd drive. see if you can boot from teh cd with that

Formatting the two hard drives fixed the lack of a letter for them.

Tonight I attack w98se install again.
