Newbie question

I'm sure this is common knowledge and I'm just not in the loop of things. I have an Englight 7237 case (I think that's the right number). Anyway, I have an exhaust fan on the back of the case. It makes it too loud vs. the previous fan I had in there that died (I pulled it out of an old AT PSU, guess it was pretty old). Would removing the metal piece on the back that the air flows through help cut down on noise? Any anti-noise tips would be appreciated. 🙂 Thanks!

Yes removing that metal piece is a good idea. Besides reducing the noise it will also allow the fan to move more air. If it's still too loud and you don't need the full power you could put the fans at 5 or 7 volts to reduce their speed. Having balanced noise is the key - ie. you won't hear your case fans if you have a louder cpu fan and vice versa.

Ahh okay, thanks, cirrus1. How do I get a fan to run at 5 or 7 volts? I'm guessing it's kinda tricky. 🙂

Actually not 🙂 If you look at the plugs they have 4 wires on the P/S side and only 2 wires on the fan side. On the P/S side the yellow wire is +12v, the red is +5v, and the two black ones in the middle are ground (or 0v if you like). The usual way that the fan is connected, is to the yellow and the black wire next to it therefore running at 12v. If you want the fan to run at 5v you just have to move the small connector on the red fan wire over to +5v which is the red wire on the P/S side. Voila 5v 🙂

Then you'd might ask - Where do I get 7v from, because there is no 7v wire? Simple... What matters with fans are the difference in voltages between the two wires. Therefore connecting the black negative wire to the +5v connector and the red positive wire to the +12v will give a difference in this way: 12v - 5v = 7v Big voila!

So you should just place the black negative wire from the fan to the red wire on the P/S side and the red positive fan wire to the yellow wire on the P/S side 🙂

Hope you can use it and just ask if you are in doubt about something 🙂
