I'm attempting to build my first PC. Found a decent deal on a 15GB IBM 75GXP. Do I need a special controller card for this kind of drive? Is the kind of motherboard I get relevant to the performance of the drive? Or since it's EIDE does not much matter... thanks!

Either the Motherboard or a seperate controller card must be ATA100 compatible to take advantage of the drives ATA100 interface. However it will run on ATA66 and/or ATA33.

One thing to mention is that you won't really be able to take advantage of that UDMA100 because the harddrive won't be able to maintain that mutch flow. Only the buffer will flow at 100. So as long as the board has UDMA66 you should be more worried about the other features of the MB. Infact I think it was Anandtech that did a nice little article comparing 66 and 100 UDMA.

Basically UDMA 100 won't run that HD any faster than UDMA 66.
