Newbie question on TV Out (Clone Mode)

I have a feeling this is a stupid question.

I have an Nvidia 6800 graphics card with video out. I normally run my monitor at 75Hz vertical refresh, but when I switch to Clone mode to watch a video on my TV, the card automatically bumps my monitor down to 60Hz. I just assumed that was a requirement of the TV, but it makes for a lot of flicker on my monitor. So my question is, are the outputs of the 6800 independent with regard to frequency, even in Clone Mode? IOW, can I set my monitor back to 75Hz while in Clone Mode without hurting my TV? Thanks.
