Decided today to try out Linux Mandrake for the first time on my 2nd PC.
and was wondering,is it supposed to take so long to install?
taking like an hour to install, and still at 7 Mins left as i speak.

running:
Cel 500
128Mb Ram
50X Cdrom

does it usually take this long?

and also, would this be the best version of linux for me to be starting out on?

oh yeah one last thing,Linux is a non PNP OS correct?
ain't got a chance to use it yet since its still installing.
was just curious.

You should have finish your installation when this message arrive :)

Long or short, is depend on how many modules you install on your box. more module means more time, more harddisk space.

not PNP OS ? what do you mean ? it can detect my voodoo3, my MX300 card precisely.... so no need to configure it manually

oh btw i use redhat and slakware..... i like both of them

Hey Qzruh.is there anyway to install the minimal packages possible?
i tried to do the customized install, but still right before installing,it sais installing 140 packages...and it took forever.

and i still havn't installed it.it got to 20 Secs Left and wouldn't finish.
don't know if it could maybe be my Cd or what.but it hung on that part for like 10 mins before i gave up on it.

Also, does all Linux OS look about the same?i seen screens of mandrake and it looks decent, but was thinking on trying Redhat or something.having a problem with this mandrake for some reason.

Still looking for some info on isntalling the least minimal package possible.

keeps showing i'm installing 140 packages.and takes forever to install and never seems to finish.

could it be the HD?i'm just basically testing this system out till the HD gets here.so i'm stuck with a 1G Drive until then.

so figured i would give Linux a shot just to check it out.

Least package ? well this is the tricky part, you should know which package is useful for you or which is not

if you don't plan to run a web server, dont bother install httpd, if you will never compile any program on your box, dont install the development package (C, GNU, Tcl whatever) on even more, you can choose not to install X-Win which eat the biggest space on your harddisk (means less package if you dont install X-Win)

In Redhat, they separate the installation into three, personal, server, or custom, CMIIW, personal take about 600 megs in space or maybe more, if you use X-Windows

All linux is almost the same, just like a chocholate candy in a different wrap :)

good luck
