I am new to networking so go slow with me...

I have a stand alone computer that is running Win98SE that has a network card and connect to a hardwire port of a Wireless router. My laptop has Win XP home and has a wireless PCMIA card and both have shown that they are communicating with good link quality...What is the question...should be easy from here right?? Anyway I try on the laptop to setup a home network and get to the point it wants to make a disk for the other computer. Neat part is that I don't have a floppy and it does not recognize my external CDRW to make this disk. I thought I would just work it opposite from the win 98 computer but I can't figure out how. Do I have to buy an external floppy to make this work? Keep in mind that I don't know JACK about networking. I went to practicallynetworked.com and it either did not discuss this situation or I am just too dumb to figure it out. If anyone could get me moving in the right direction...I would sincerely appreciate it.

If you have a router, I don't know what one computer making a disk for the other one is all about! If you have a link established to the router, you should install TCP/IP protocol, and enable DHCP on the new machine. If you want to share files on this machine, install file and print sharing, and you should be all set.

How would I go about doing that? I am obviously sharp as a bowling ball but I can follow instructions like nobodys business.

did I say something wrong?? I feel like I am close. Neither one of these machines were part of a pre-existing network so I don't know how to set this up or how to copy it...HELP

Are you trying to create a winxp wizard disk or something? If so, that isn't really necessary, you can do it yourself. Take a look at the Anandtech networking FAQs and if those don't help get back to us.

I am not sure what I was trying to do. I read through all the FAQ's for networking and I didn't see any that address win XP. I am assuming that XP and 2K are similar but when it talks about logging in on the 98 machine is it talking about the screen that it boots up to?? I am sure that it is obvious for everyone here but me...I am feeling pretty dumb but, I have to get this done. Can someone point me to or tell me a step by step. What specifically do I have to do to each machine to get to share printers and files?
