newbie question, how to partition.

I am surprised that I got thru not learning partition and now my ignorance has come back to haunt me.

I just got my HDD, I did Fdisk in win98.
i did a primary and an extended.
what's a logical drive?

meanwhile, I CANNNOT make more than 2 partition....
only C and D drive.

and what's Partition Magic that I kept on hearing all the time.

Primary is the boot parition, the one that will be used by default when the comp boots up (correct me if I'm wrong). The extended is the rest of the harddrive. For the extended drive to be used, it has to be made into logical drives. You can make any number of logical drives outta the space you have in the extended. So your primary will be C, your extended won't have a letter but will be divided into multiple paritions. So here's an example (my hd)

Primary: C (2gb)

Extended: (18gb)
..... D(4gb)
..... E(7gb)
..... F(9gb)

ltk007--I couldn't a said it better myself....now, when you add more physical hard drives, things really get interesting....

PM is amazing. Check it out at www.powerquest.com. Yes, it really is that good.

yep

there can only be 1 logical drive in the primary partition
only secondary partition where you can split it up to more than 1

These guys got it. I just want to ad that Buy.com has Partion Magic 4.0 in the Clearance section for $13 shipped. Nice program for the money. LINK

If you don't like the way you have set up the partions using fdisk, this program with help you change it without loosing your data.

DON'T use partition magic 4.0. If you're going to use that software make sure you use 5.0 or above. I have had anal throbbing problems when using 4.0 or lower versions.

I have used both 5.0 and 5.5 and they are both great. It's great for newbies, because they have wizards to walk you through, just make sure to save an image of registry/HD before you do this just incase things get screwey.
