Newbie question about sharing 'net on two computers

Hey everyone, I'm trying to set up the internet on two computers at my place and I'm wondering how to do it. I've done a bit of research, but I want to make sure I know how to do it.

I'm building my own computer around Christmas, and I'm using a PII450 right now, so I was hoping I could have the 'net on both. I called my ISP last night and they said I could use either a Hub or a Router. One's cheaper, but you have to pay 9$ more a month to the ISP, and the other's more expensive but costs no extra to use because you share an IP. I want the second option bacause it will eventually pay for itself. I'm just not sure which is the router and which is the Hub. I'm guessing router, since it sounds like it would be the one to share an IP. Am I right?
I'm gonna guess how to do it, please correct me if I'm wrong or miss a step.

So to hook it up, I'll need a network card in each, the router, a cable modem, and the wires to connect 'em.
Put a NIC in each, plug the coax into the cable modem, and, I'm assuming, since the router acts as sort of a splitter, plug the one line into the back of one computer, and the other in the second computer. That's it for hardware, right?

This leads me to my second question; I've got Windows 98 on one PC, and I'm hoping to put XP on the other, will I be able to do this if each has a different OS?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

in answer to networking win xp and 98

install the network first on xp then create the floppy(in the network setup in xp) then use that floppy to install the network on 98

its a lot easier that way.

i have dsl not cable and a router is better.the hardware looks right.

the networking setup in xp is actually much simplier to set up than 98.after installing the network reboot both machines and you should be up and running.

i set mine up with a hub and missed that ics (internet connection sharing) had to be enabled lol thanks jackmds for that help lol

good luck
mike

Thanks JackMDS, option 3 here is what I want to do. I was unsure if you could use two different OS's, thanks for your help too, Wolfsraider!

So I need a cable/DSL router, another NIC, and some cable and, it looks like, no aditional software to hog resources! Nice. Thanks!
