Newbie question about RAM

Heyall.

I got a system that I use for semi-old games (2003 and earlier) - socket A MoBo, GF3 and assorted semi-antiquated peripherals. Unfortunately, it's sorely lacking in the RAM department - it's got 256MB of PC2100 DDR RAM.

I'm about to add another 512MB to that, but since all RAM speeds below PC3700 are identical in price and I might upgrade my mobo and processor in a relatively short future I have a question: is it possible to use two sticks of DDR RAM with different sizes, manufacturers and speeds without making the system unstable?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Yes, usually if you know what you are doing. you may have to manually tweak the ram timings in the bios though until you find the sweet spot that both sticks will run at. You will likely have to keep both sticks close to PC2100 speeds though.

Usually if you're using decent quality ram there isn't a problem. The only thing t keep in mind is that all the memory will run at the speed of the slowest stick.
