Newbie question about memory

Hi all,

I have DDR2100 memory from an old Duron system. I want to upgrade the processor. What's the best AMD processor that I can use with that old memory? My motherboard supports 266MHz bus.

This new memory rating system isn't like the old PC133 which use to mean 133MHz bus speed. I read up on it a bit and I know that my memory will do 266MHz, but I'm not really up on the CPU's that will work with this bus speed.

Thanks for the help in advance!

After reading up some more I think I might have found the answer. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

PC2100 Ram will work w/ up to Athlon XP 2400+ since that is the last AMD processor with 266MHz bus.

Is is okay to run PC2700 Ram with a processor that runs at 266MHz like the Athlon 2400+?

Thanks,
Jaz

You're correct, the fastest 266mhz bus Athlon is the XP2400. And if you buy (or otherwise acquire!) some PC2700 ram at a later date, then you will be able to overclock that 2400.😀

The beauty of most systems these days is that memory can run asynchronously with the FSB. That way we don't need to upgrade everything in one go - although that is nice to do once in a while.
