newbie question about geforce video cards..

this might seem like a stupid question..but i was looking at pricewatch.com for a geforce 2 ultra video card.. geforce is made by nvidia right? i was wondering how come there's different "brands" of geforce cards if they're made by nvidia?

Nvidia makes the geforce products, then they sell the chips to other companies who make video cards with them.

are there like certain brands of the geforce that are better than the others or are they pretty much teh same?

Nvidia just makes reference chipsets and licenses out the reference to various video card manufacturers who produce and sell cards based on the reference. I will refer you herefor information on the cards offered by different manufacturers. Follow the links at the bottom to Anandtech reviews on the different GeForce products.

If you are looking at the Geforce2 range then the Elsa is good since it has very good 2D image quality compared to other Geforce2 cards.

All of them are very good, the brand names usually use better quality components and overclock better and come with better cooling and software. But all of them are good and will run fine. It's not a very clear thing of "you pay for what you get" because with the name brands you do pay for the brand too.
