Newbie Q: Does OEM CPU come with a heatsink? What else do I need to get to get it running, if buying OEM? Thanks, <nt>

No, OEM CPUs don't come with a HSF. Retail CPUs do. Retail CPUs also come with a 3 year warranty. OEM CPUs usually come with no more than a year but often much less (15 days, 30 days, etc...) Now a few retailers bundle HSF with OEM CPUs but you don't want to go that route. If you buy an OEM chip, then get yourself a nice big aftermarket HSF.

Appreciate the insight. I thought so, but somehow I've only been seeing stores online selling fans but not heatsinks. Or does it come in a combo? I'm thinking of getting a PIII 1 gig'er flip-chip.

Also, do I have to get thermal paste or pad at extra, or does it come with the heatsink?

Usually the "fan or fans" are screwed on the heatsink. buy some thermal paste from radio shack if you choose not to use the attached patch.

Most of the time when a dealer sells a fan, it also comes with the heatsink attached. However, some big name heatsinks don't come with fans attached and leave it up to the dealer or end user to select a suitable fan. Definitely make sure before you order anything, because a fan by itself is probably more expensive than that same fan bundled with a heatsink.

As for thermal compound, most of the better brands will include a little "blister pack" of grease good for two or three applications. There will sometimes be a little "phase-change thermal pad" at the bottom of the heatsink. In that case, just remove the plastic or paper protective cover and mount the heatsink directly on the CPU. When it heats up, the compound will "change phase" and basically melt onto the CPU ensuring good contact.

There are debates as to whether thermal grease or thermal pads work best. I belive that very good thermal grease, like Arctic Silver, is better than anything else, but that the cheap generic silicone compound tends to dry up over time, making thermal pads the better choice.
