Newbie PSU Question ... do i need a better PSU?

I have a 300 watt PSU and i am planning on running 2 HD's, one CD-RW, one DVD-Rom, Athlon XP 1600+ and a GeForce 3.

Will the 300 watt PSU be sufficient?

Very much so. I PC uses less then two 60 watt light bulbs of power. That's less then 120 watts. Of course, the rails have to be distributed properly. You're going to have a high demand on your 12 v rail. Most OEMs like gateway and dell only use 160watt cpus so you have enough headroom to be confident that each rail is getting enough power.
