Newbie oriented Linux

Looking to try an alternative to windows, so i thought i'de give linux a shot, just wondering what the best, free relatively easy to install distribution is.

these are all really good choices, and all of them have pretty painless installs. You should read the Dual Boot thread, because there is some good info in there. For an easy introduction, try one of the live cd's which simply run off of a cd and don't touch your hard drive.
