Hi all. this is a really stupid question but i'm a newbie. well its like this, i read the guide to overclocking and it says that the easiest way to have the memory compatible with the fsb is to buy a "higher" mhz ram. well i did that. i bought the ocz pc4000 ddr500 so i dont have to oc the ram even if i oc the fsb to 250mhz (hope thats right). i just ran the the 3dmark05 and it says that my frequency is @ 333mhz.

Memory Array 1/1
Max Module Capacity 0 B
Supported Speeds
Supported Types
Supported Voltages

Memory Slot 1/2
Installed Enabled Size 512 MB
Form Factor DIMM
Frequency 333.0 Mhz
Slot DIMM0
Manufacturer <unknown>

Enabled Size 512 MB
Total Bit Width 72 b
Data Bit Width 0 b
Memory Slot 2/2
Installed Enabled Size 512 MB
Form Factor DIMM
Frequency 333.0 MHz
Slot DIMM1
Manufacturer <unknown>

do have to go to bios to change the memory mhz, etc? (i was in bios and i see no options for ram)
i already oc my 3500+ to about 2.5 with 227 x 11. what did i do wrong? plz help. thx

the RAM speed has to match the speed of the FSB of the CPU somehow...so even if you have RAM that *can* run at 250MHz it won't unless you run the FSB of your CPU that speed, or faster. You should read up on the RAM to FSB ratio stuff..

first, thanks for the reply.
i know i have to increase the fsb speed, i did that.. from 200mhz to 227mhz
do i also have to increase the ram speed? or will it automatically match up since i have ddr500 (250mhz)?
i thought i only have to increase the speed or overclock it if i increase my fsb pass 250mhz.
please let me know if i got the right idea.
thanks

First off, I haven't reached A64 status yet (kids cost money too). My board is an ASUS A7N8X running a barton 2500. At least with this board, the cpu and memory runs best if its run at the same speeds. However, in the bios, I have a variety of ram clocking options from which to choose. I suspect your ASUS A64 board would be the same. Look around in your bios and set your ram to run at the same speed as your cpu. Others here would be better able to help you than I, but my hunch is you're on the right page.

yes it does, i just found it. thanks.
which leads to more questions.
the only options i have on the frequency are:
1:1 @ (DDR 200)
4:3 @ (DDR 333)
...
2:1 @ (DDR 400)

..i have like 4 options... and none of them is the one i need.
i set the fsb to 227mhz so shouldn't the ram be set on (227 x 2)mhz?
also, why is DDR200 a 1:1 ratio? shouldn't DDR400 be 1:1 ratio for 200mhz fsb?
are there other options in bios that i don't know about?
thanks

First, set it to 1:1, because then the ram should be at 227mhz = DDR454. Then, get cpu-z and run it to make sure its running at that speed. That should work. Also, if it doesnt like that, turn your HTT multiplier to 4x if it isnt there already.

that is what is confusing me.
my only options are :
1. "1:1 (DDR200)"
2. "4:3 (DDR226)"
3. "3:2"
4. "5:3 (DDR333)"
5. "2:1 (DDR400)"

the ratio and the ddr mhz are together as one option. so if i want 1:1 ratio, i have to choose "1:1 (DDR200)"... even though i increased my fsb from 220 to 227mhz.
should i leave it at auto?
but when i leave it on auto, i ran my 3dmark05 and it says my frequency it at ddr333mhz...
how can i make it so that it is 1:1 ration @ ddr454?
my memory is ddr500, should it automatically run at 227mhz or ddr454?
thanks

i did set it as ddr400 but when i ran the 3dmark05, it says my frequency is at ddr400. is there another way to make it so that it would be ddr454?

It'll probably SAY DDR400 but will be running at DDR454 speeds. Download SiSoft Sandra and run a memory bandwidth test, that'll tell for sure... run a test with your system at 200FSB and another test with it at 227FSB, both with 2:1 memory ratios. You should see a big boost going to 227FSB.

thanks all. i used sisoft sandra and ran the mem bandwidth test results:
fsb @ 200, mem @ auto = 5695mbs, 5619mbs
fsb @ 215, mem @ suto = 6109mbs, 6040mbs
fsb @ 225, mem @ auto = 5043mbs, 5048mbs
fsb @ 225, mem @ ddr400 = 6400mbs, 6332mbs
fsb @ 227, mem @ ddr400 = 6462mbs, 6389mbs
.... 😛
much better, at least i now know that it is running at ddr454.. the test results shows that i am running @ ddr454... thanks
... but if i wanted to go higher than 250 fsb, how can i oc the mem on this asus mobo?
