Newbie networker, advice needed :)

Im planning on sharing my DSL connection with 1 or 2 computers, I will start out networking 2 computers, both have Windows ME. So do I keep the modem at the host computer (mine) with the NIC connected as is, purchase a router and connect that and then carry a cable to the room with the other computer w/ a NIC? Also would I need a hub in this case, do hubs provide faster speed or what? Wouldn't a router be good enough, or not? Thanks!

Get either the Linksys 4port router or the Netgear RT314 router....connect dsl modem to router...run cable from each computer to the switch. Thats probably best way. You can go with just the router but with the 4port switch you have the ability to add 2 more computers down the road.....or if a buddy wants to bring his machine over to hook in your network for a game of UT.

In the computer that my sister will be using I already have a 10 MBIT NIC, will this suffice for everyday internet and OCASSIONAL gaming? Also I doubt I would use that computer too much for games, mainly use the router for when friends come over, also you mentioned switch, does this mean the switch w/in the router or a separate one? Thanks.

Yeah, the routers, Linksys BEFSR41 and the Netgear RT314, have a 4-Port built in switch built in.
The Linksys BEFSR11 and Netgear's RT311 is just a Router only....
A 10 base Nic card will be just fine for your sister.

A 10 base card is all is needed as that all the faster the DSL comes into the router as. You could also skip the router and use your computer as the ICS machine with two NICs. Windows ME makes this sooooo easy to do. Just click on Network Wizard after your second card is installed. Routers work good also but cost more to do it that way. Depends if you want your machine to be running all the time.

Is the 2 NIC solution slower? Also will my computer still be able to transfer info to the client computer if it is in suspend ( not hard drive suspend or anything...).

Actually the 2 NICs and windows ICS solution is faster then my Netgear Router I have. Gamespy for example updates about 3 times faster.

Accessing the computer in suspend? = no unless you use wake on lan And that I never have used.

No you won't be able to transfer stuff to a PC that is in Suspend unless that PC has Wake-On-LAN feature... in which case that computer will wake up from Suspend when u transfer and receive them...
