Newbie needs help setting up a network

I have a desktop and laptop. Both have eithernet cards. Is there a way to trasfer files between them?

I've tried to plug the cable from the desktop's eithernet to the laptops eithernet. Then run the network wizard (Connect directly to another computer). Made one the host and one the guest. And nothing The only options it gives me for ports are LTP1 or COM1 and I've tried both.

Im not trying to share internet, just move files from one to another without haveing to burn it on CD.

For a direct connection like that, you need to use a crossover cable.

Yup! Either do that or buy a switch/hub and connect both to it.
