Newbie Needs help optimizing new Compaq Desktop

Picked up a Compaq Presario SR1200NX with an AMD Sempron Processor 2800+. It's reviewed with specs here:

I realize Compaq's come with a lot of garbage loaded. Turned off everything in the startup through MSCONFIG and upgraded memory from 256 to 768.

What else can I do to this to insure smooth operating? Will be using it for digital camcorder editing
and home office use. It will never be connected to the internet.


 
personally, i would have just reformatted the hd and only have installed the OS and whatever drivers and other programs that i wanted. msconfig is good, but i think doing it that way still uses up hd space.

 
I'd like to do a clean install of OS, but is that possible from the restore discs that came with it? Don't have an XP disk.
