Newbie Linux question.

Finally got around to installing Mandrake 8.2 on a laptop I have. I'm trying to install xchat, and it tells me I need gtk+ 2.0, so I get it, and it tells me I need libpng.so.2, so I get and install libpng following directions with no errors. Now I try to install gtk+ again, and I'm missing libpng.so.2... I've tried everything I can think of so now I'm asking for help. 😛 I'll answer questions as best I can, thanks in advance!

I really don't know a heck of a lot about linux, but if you go to www.rpmfind.net and do a search for libpng.so.2 or what ever the file name is, it should tell you the package that that file is in. So then you can install it off your cd if it is on there or rpmfind will offer alternative locations. Just remember to dl it for the distro you are using which would be Mandrake 8.2.

Good luck with it.

By the way I think Xchat is on the mandrake cds. If you use software manager (or what ever it is called) it will install the program and all the required components with it.

This is something great about Mandrake. Instead of the typical rpm process, you use urpm ('user RPM') which can sense dependencies and automatically download them after prompting you. It takes a minute to set it up, but once it works, it works well. See this page for an intro.
